A few months ago I was on a work trip to London and Dublin. We were attending a lot of business dinners and I was getting anxious about how to maintain my weight loss. So I decided better get up 45 minutes early and go out and enjoy the sites in the early morning while burning some calories. I decide to find some tourist destination with a kilometre or so of the hotel, and power walk over there. St Paul's Cathedral was the destination day one - nothing like a goal to motivate me - and the promise of a latte in front of the Cathedral when i got there.
It was pretty chilly at 6am so as I set out I decided I better run for a bit to warm up. You will note to date that running does not feature largely in this blog as I tend power walk. Running was amazing, exhilarating and inspiring. It helped having some pretty rhythmic IPod music to keep me going, but I loved it. I tried it again in Dublin and by the time I hit New York a few weeks later I was running to Central Park and back like a pro.
I decided it takes either gumption, or an "I don't care what they think" type of attitude to run around openly in the streets of any major city, or village for that matter. It helped me enormously to look the part, to disappear into the sound of the music (but to keep an eye out for traffic) and to keep it steady and within reason. I also had to make sure that I was running to a destination that I could manage and could actually make it back to my hotel in time for daily meetings.
Nevertheless running is exhilarating. It kicks in endorphins and if you run with gay abandon, flashbacks of your innocent childhood years will kick in and you will find yourself fully immersed in the joy of it. And here is the best part of all - the calories just melt away. I can't do it all the time, but with the right conditions, I can now say "I run". Who would have thought....
