Sometimes, when I feel like I want to give up on the walking machine, I imagine I have my own personal cheer squad. I imagine Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, the Dalai Lama and Thich Nhat Hanh are standing around the machine laughing, clapping and egging me on! Its remarkably powerful to have them all there admiring and cheering me. As they are such positive people, who seem to always cheer for those willing to have a go, then I feel really inspired. Sometimes to impress them I put in another few minutes, an extra 500 metres or increase the speed. That always makes them laugh and cheer louder. I tried inviting people like J Lo and Britney Spears once but they just intimidated me, Oprah made me feel analysed and Ellen made me laugh too much. So it’s this little gaggle of motivating, always smiling gentlemen which gather around as my cheer squad. Try it – who would you invite? Feel free to borrow them if you like, I am sure it’s not sacrilegious and they are always generous with their time!
I’m going to try Gandhi next.

Emma, I tried invoking the Dalai Lama in my own weight loss efforts but found that instead of cheering me on, he mischievously started urging me to eat more cookies because life is short and we shouldn’t be attached to material things like how much we weigh! I’m going to try Gandhi next.

No need - Aung San Su Chee is already applauding my efforts, without a flicker of judgement in her tiny featuers.
